The Ultimate Gain
June 20, 2025
Verse:
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36, KJV)
Devotional:
We live in a world that is obsessed with success. Everywhere we turn, we see people chasing after wealth, fame, power, and status. We are bombarded with messages that tell us that success equals happiness, and that the pursuit of material possessions is the key to a fulfilling life. But as Christians, we know that this couldn't be further from the truth.
Jesus reminds us in Mark 8:36 that the things of this world, no matter how desirable they may seem, are ultimately worthless if they come at the cost of our souls. What good is it to gain the whole world if we forfeit our eternal life? What good is it to achieve all of our earthly goals if we neglect our relationship with God?
As Christians, we are called to a different kind of success. We are called to pursue a life of righteousness and holiness, to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). We are called to lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal (Matthew 6:20).
It's not always easy to resist the temptations of this world, especially when we see others around us achieving worldly success. But we must remember that our ultimate goal is not to gain the approval of the world, but to live a life that is pleasing to God. We must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), and trust that He will provide for our needs and guide us on the path that leads to eternal life.
Daily Challenge:
Take some time to reflect on your priorities. Are you chasing after worldly success at the expense of your relationship with God? Are there areas of your life where you need to make changes in order to align more closely with God's will? Pray for the wisdom and courage to pursue the things that truly matter and to let go of anything that is hindering your spiritual growth.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for reminding us that the things of this world are ultimately worthless if we neglect our souls. Help us to resist the temptations of this world and to pursue a life that is pleasing to You. Give us the wisdom and courage to make the changes necessary to align more closely with Your will. And most of all, help us to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. In Jesus' precious name, we pray. Amen.
