¹For the director of music. A psalm of David. Rescue me, LORD, from evildoers; protect me from the violent,

²who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up war every day.

³They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent’s; the poison of vipers is on their lips.

⁴Keep me safe, LORD, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from the violent, who devise ways to trip my feet.

⁵The arrogant have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path.

⁶I say to the LORD, “You are my God.” Hear, LORD, my cry for mercy.

⁷Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, you shield my head in the day of battle.

⁸Do not grant the wicked their desires, LORD; do not let their plans succeed.

⁹Those who surround me proudly rear their heads; may the mischief of their lips engulf them.

¹⁰May burning coals fall on them; may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise.

¹¹May slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down the violent.

¹²I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.

¹³Surely the righteous will praise your name, and the upright will live in your presence.

¹A psalm of David. I call to you, LORD, come quickly to me; hear me when I call to you.

²May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.

³Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

⁴Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies.

⁵Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness; let him rebuke me—that is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it, for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers.

⁶Their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs, and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.

⁷They will say, “As one plows and breaks up the earth, so our bones have been scattered at the mouth of the grave.”

⁸But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.

⁹Keep me safe from the traps set by evildoers, from the snares they have laid for me.

¹⁰Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by in safety.

¹A maskil of David. When he was in the cave. A prayer. I cry aloud to the LORD; I lift up my voice to the LORD for mercy.

²I pour out before him my complaint; before him I tell my trouble.

³When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who watch over my way. In the path where I walk people have hidden a snare for me.

⁴Look and see, there is no one at my right hand; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life.

⁵I cry to you, LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”

⁶Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me.

⁷Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me.

¹A psalm of David. LORD, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief.

²Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you.

³The enemy pursues me, he crushes me to the ground; he makes me dwell in the darkness like those long dead.

⁴So my spirit grows faint within me; my heart within me is dismayed.

⁵I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done.

⁶I spread out my hands to you; I thirst for you like a parched land.

⁷Answer me quickly, LORD; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit.

⁸Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.

⁹Rescue me from my enemies, LORD, for I hide myself in you.

¹⁰Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

¹¹For your name’s sake, LORD, preserve my life; in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.

¹²In your unfailing love, silence my enemies; destroy all my foes, for I am your servant.

¹Of David. Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.

²He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.

³LORD, what are human beings that you care for them, mere mortals that you think of them?

⁴They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow.

⁵Part your heavens, LORD, and come down; touch the mountains, so that they smoke.

⁶Send forth lightning and scatter the enemy; shoot your arrows and rout them.

⁷Reach down your hand from on high; deliver me and rescue me from the mighty waters, from the hands of foreigners

⁸whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful.

⁹I will sing a new song to you, my God; on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you,

¹⁰to the One who gives victory to kings, who delivers his servant David. From the deadly sword

¹¹deliver me; rescue me from the hands of foreigners whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful.

¹²Then our sons in their youth will be like well-nurtured plants, and our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace.

¹³Our barns will be filled with every kind of provision. Our sheep will increase by thousands, by tens of thousands in our fields;

¹⁴our oxen will draw heavy loads. There will be no breaching of walls, no going into captivity, no cry of distress in our streets.

¹⁵Blessed is the people of whom this is true; blessed is the people whose God is the LORD.

¹A psalm of praise. Of David. I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever.

²Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.

³Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.

⁴One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.

⁵They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty— and I will meditate on your wonderful works.

⁶They tell of the power of your awesome works— and I will proclaim your great deeds.

⁷They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.

⁸The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.

⁹The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.

¹⁰All your works praise you, LORD; your faithful people extol you.

¹¹They tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might,

¹²so that all people may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

¹³Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.

¹⁴The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.

¹⁵The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time.

¹⁶You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

¹⁷The LORD is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does.

¹⁸The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

¹⁹He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.

²⁰The LORD watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

²¹My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever.

¹Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, my soul.

²I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

³Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save.

⁴When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.

⁵Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God.

⁶He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them— he remains faithful forever.

⁷He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free,

⁸the LORD gives sight to the blind, the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down, the LORD loves the righteous.

⁹The LORD watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

¹⁰The LORD reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD.

¹Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

²The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the exiles of Israel.

³He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

⁴He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

⁵Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

⁶The LORD sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground.

⁷Sing to the LORD with grateful praise; make music to our God on the harp.

⁸He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills.

⁹He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call.

¹⁰His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of the warrior;

¹¹the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

¹²Extol the LORD, Jerusalem; praise your God, Zion.

¹³He strengthens the bars of your gates and blesses your people within you.

¹⁴He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat.

¹⁵He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly.

¹⁶He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes.

¹⁷He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast?

¹⁸He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.

¹⁹He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel.

²⁰He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the LORD.

¹Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights above.

²Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

³Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars.

⁴Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies.

⁵Let them praise the name of the LORD, for at his command they were created,

⁶and he established them for ever and ever— he issued a decree that will never pass away.

⁷Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,

⁸lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding,

⁹you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars,

¹⁰wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds,

¹¹kings of the earth and all nations, you princes and all rulers on earth,

¹²young men and women, old men and children.

¹³Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens.

¹⁴And he has raised up for his people a horn, the praise of all his faithful servants, of Israel, the people close to his heart. Praise the LORD.

¹Praise the LORD. Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of his faithful people.

²Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; let the people of Zion be glad in their King.

³Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with timbrel and harp.

⁴For the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.

⁵Let his faithful people rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds.

⁶May the praise of God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands,

⁷to inflict vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples,

⁸to bind their kings with fetters, their nobles with shackles of iron,

⁹to carry out the sentence written against them— this is the glory of all his faithful people. Praise the LORD.

¹Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.

²Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.

³Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre,

⁴praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe,

⁵praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.

⁶Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.

¹The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

²for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight;

³for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair;

⁴for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young—

⁵let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—

⁶for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.

⁷The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

⁸Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

⁹They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.

¹⁰My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them.

¹¹If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul;

¹²let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;

¹³we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;

¹⁴cast lots with us; we will all share the loot”—

¹⁵my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;

¹⁶for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood.

¹⁷How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it!

¹⁸These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves!

¹⁹Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.

²⁰Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square;

²¹on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech:

²²“How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?

²³Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings.

²⁴But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,

²⁵since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke,

²⁶I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you—

²⁷when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

²⁸“Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me,

²⁹since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD.

³⁰Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,

³¹they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.

³²For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

³³but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

¹My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,

²turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—

³indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,

⁴and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,

⁵then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.

⁶For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

⁷He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,

⁸for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.

⁹Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path.

¹⁰For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.

¹¹Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.

¹²Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse,

¹³who have left the straight paths to walk in dark ways,

¹⁴who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil,

¹⁵whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.

¹⁶Wisdom will save you also from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman with her seductive words,

¹⁷who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the covenant she made before God.

¹⁸Surely her house leads down to death and her paths to the spirits of the dead.

¹⁹None who go to her return or attain the paths of life.

²⁰Thus you will walk in the ways of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous.

²¹For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it;

²²but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be torn from it.
