¹To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. [1] Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men; Preserve me from violent men,

²Who plan evil things in their hearts; They continually gather together for war.

³They sharpen their tongues like a serpent; The poison of asps is under their lips. Selah

⁴Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; Preserve me from violent men, Who have purposed to make my steps stumble.

⁵The proud have hidden a snare for me, and cords; They have spread a net by the wayside; They have set traps for me. Selah

⁶I said to the LORD: “You are my God; Hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.

⁷O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in the day of battle.

⁸Do not grant, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; Do not further his wicked scheme, Lest they be exalted. Selah

⁹“As for the head of those who surround me, Let the evil of their lips cover them;

¹⁰Let burning coals fall upon them; Let them be cast into the fire, Into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

¹¹Let not a slanderer be established in the earth; Let evil hunt the violent man to overthrow him.”

¹²I know that the LORD will maintain The cause of the afflicted, And justice for the poor.

¹³Surely the righteous shall give thanks to Your name; The upright shall dwell in Your presence.

¹A Psalm of David. [1] LORD, I cry out to You; Make haste to me! Give ear to my voice when I cry out to You.

²Let my prayer be set before You as incense, The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

³Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.

⁴Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, To practice wicked works With men who work iniquity; And do not let me eat of their delicacies.

⁵Let the righteous strike me; It shall be a kindness. And let him rebuke me; It shall be as excellent oil; Let my head not refuse it. For still my prayer is against the deeds of the wicked.

⁶Their judges are overthrown by the sides of the cliff, And they hear my words, for they are sweet.

⁷Our bones are scattered at the mouth of the grave, As when one plows and breaks up the earth.

⁸But my eyes are upon You, O GOD the Lord; In You I take refuge; Do not leave my soul destitute.

⁹Keep me from the snares they have laid for me, And from the traps of the workers of iniquity.

¹⁰Let the wicked fall into their own nets, While I escape safely.

¹A Contemplation of David. A Prayer when he was in the cave. [1] I cry out to the LORD with my voice; With my voice to the LORD I make my supplication.

²I pour out my complaint before Him; I declare before Him my trouble.

³When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, Then You knew my path. In the way in which I walk They have secretly set a snare for me.

⁴Look on my right hand and see, For there is no one who acknowledges me; Refuge has failed me; No one cares for my soul.

⁵I cried out to You, O LORD: I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living.

⁶Attend to my cry, For I am brought very low; Deliver me from my persecutors, For they are stronger than I.

⁷Bring my soul out of prison, That I may praise Your name; The righteous shall surround me, For You shall deal bountifully with me.”

¹A Psalm of David. [1] Hear my prayer, O LORD, Give ear to my supplications! In Your faithfulness answer me, And in Your righteousness.

²Do not enter into judgment with Your servant, For in Your sight no one living is righteous.

³For the enemy has persecuted my soul; He has crushed my life to the ground; He has made me dwell in darkness, Like those who have long been dead.

⁴Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me; My heart within me is distressed.

⁵I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands.

⁶I spread out my hands to You; My soul longs for You like a thirsty land. Selah

⁷Answer me speedily, O LORD; My spirit fails! Do not hide Your face from me, Lest I be like those who go down into the pit.

⁸Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.

⁹Deliver me, O LORD, from my enemies; In You I take shelter.

¹⁰Teach me to do Your will, For You are my God; Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.

¹¹Revive me, O LORD, for Your name’s sake! For Your righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble.

¹²In Your mercy cut off my enemies, And destroy all those who afflict my soul; For I am Your servant.

¹A Psalm of David. [1] Blessed be the LORD my Rock, Who trains my hands for war, And my fingers for battle—

²My lovingkindness and my fortress, My high tower and my deliverer, My shield and the One in whom I take refuge, Who subdues my people under me.

³LORD, what is man, that You take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him?

⁴Man is like a breath; His days are like a passing shadow.

⁵Bow down Your heavens, O LORD, and come down; Touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.

⁶Flash forth lightning and scatter them; Shoot out Your arrows and destroy them.

⁷Stretch out Your hand from above; Rescue me and deliver me out of great waters, From the hand of foreigners,

⁸Whose mouth speaks lying words, And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

⁹I will sing a new song to You, O God; On a harp of ten strings I will sing praises to You,

¹⁰The One who gives salvation to kings, Who delivers David His servant From the deadly sword.

¹¹Rescue me and deliver me from the hand of foreigners, Whose mouth speaks lying words, And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood—

¹²That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; That our daughters may be as pillars, Sculptured in palace style;

¹³That our barns may be full, Supplying all kinds of produce; That our sheep may bring forth thousands And ten thousands in our fields;

¹⁴That our oxen may be well laden; That there be no breaking in or going out; That there be no outcry in our streets.

¹⁵Happy are the people who are in such a state; Happy are the people whose God is the LORD!

¹ A Praise of David. [1] I will extol You, my God, O King; And I will bless Your name forever and ever.

²Every day I will bless You, And I will praise Your name forever and ever.

³Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable.

⁴One generation shall praise Your works to another, And shall declare Your mighty acts.

⁵I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, And on Your wondrous works.

⁶Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, And I will declare Your greatness.

⁷They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness, And shall sing of Your righteousness.

⁸The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy.

⁹The LORD is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works.

¹⁰All Your works shall praise You, O LORD, And Your saints shall bless You.

¹¹They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom, And talk of Your power,

¹²To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, And the glorious majesty of His kingdom.

¹³Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And Your dominion endures throughout all generations.

¹⁴The LORD upholds all who fall, And raises up all who are bowed down.

¹⁵The eyes of all look expectantly to You, And You give them their food in due season.

¹⁶You open Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing.

¹⁷The LORD is righteous in all His ways, Gracious in all His works.

¹⁸The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth.

¹⁹He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them.

²⁰The LORD preserves all who love Him, But all the wicked He will destroy.

²¹My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD, And all flesh shall bless His holy name Forever and ever.

¹Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul!

²While I live I will praise the LORD; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

³Do not put your trust in princes, Nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help.

⁴His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; In that very day his plans perish.

⁵Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in the LORD his God,

⁶Who made heaven and earth, The sea, and all that is in them; Who keeps truth forever,

⁷Who executes justice for the oppressed, Who gives food to the hungry. The LORD gives freedom to the prisoners.

⁸The LORD opens the eyes of the blind; The LORD raises those who are bowed down; The LORD loves the righteous.

⁹The LORD watches over the strangers; He relieves the fatherless and widow; But the way of the wicked He turns upside down.

¹⁰The LORD shall reign forever— Your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the LORD!

¹Praise the LORD! For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant, and praise is beautiful.

²The LORD builds up Jerusalem; He gathers together the outcasts of Israel.

³He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.

⁴He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name.

⁵Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.

⁶The LORD lifts up the humble; He casts the wicked down to the ground.

⁷Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; Sing praises on the harp to our God,

⁸Who covers the heavens with clouds, Who prepares rain for the earth, Who makes grass to grow on the mountains.

⁹He gives to the beast its food, And to the young ravens that cry.

¹⁰He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man.

¹¹The LORD takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy.

¹²Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion!

¹³For He has strengthened the bars of your gates; He has blessed your children within you.

¹⁴He makes peace in your borders, And fills you with the finest wheat.

¹⁵He sends out His command to the earth; His word runs very swiftly.

¹⁶He gives snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes;

¹⁷He casts out His hail like morsels; Who can stand before His cold?

¹⁸He sends out His word and melts them; He causes His wind to blow, and the waters flow.

¹⁹He declares His word to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel.

²⁰He has not dealt thus with any nation; And as for His judgments, they have not known them. Praise the LORD!

¹Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; Praise Him in the heights!

²Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts!

³Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all you stars of light!

⁴Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, And you waters above the heavens!

⁵Let them praise the name of the LORD, For He commanded and they were created.

⁶He also established them forever and ever; He made a decree which shall not pass away.

⁷Praise the LORD from the earth, You great sea creatures and all the depths;

⁸Fire and hail, snow and clouds; Stormy wind, fulfilling His word;

⁹Mountains and all hills; Fruitful trees and all cedars;

¹⁰Beasts and all cattle; Creeping things and flying fowl;

¹¹Kings of the earth and all peoples; Princes and all judges of the earth;

¹²Both young men and maidens; Old men and children.

¹³Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven.

¹⁴And He has exalted the horn of His people, The praise of all His saints— Of the children of Israel, A people near to Him. Praise the LORD!

¹Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, And His praise in the assembly of saints.

²Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

³Let them praise His name with the dance; Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp.

⁴For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation.

⁵Let the saints be joyful in glory; Let them sing aloud on their beds.

⁶Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, And a two-edged sword in their hand,

⁷To execute vengeance on the nations, And punishments on the peoples;

⁸To bind their kings with chains, And their nobles with fetters of iron;

⁹To execute on them the written judgment— This honor have all His saints. Praise the LORD!

¹Praise the LORD! Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty firmament!

²Praise Him for His mighty acts; Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!

³Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; Praise Him with the lute and harp!

⁴Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!

⁵Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with clashing cymbals!

⁶Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD!

¹The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

²To know wisdom and instruction, To perceive the words of understanding,

³To receive the instruction of wisdom, Justice, judgment, and equity;

⁴To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion—

⁵A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,

⁶To understand a proverb and an enigma, The words of the wise and their riddles.

⁷The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

⁸My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother;

⁹For they will be a graceful ornament on your head, And chains about your neck.

¹⁰My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent.

¹¹If they say, “Come with us, Let us lie in wait to shed blood; Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;

¹²Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, And whole, like those who go down to the Pit;

¹³We shall find all kinds of precious possessions, We shall fill our houses with spoil;

¹⁴Cast in your lot among us, Let us all have one purse”—

¹⁵My son, do not walk in the way with them, Keep your foot from their path;

¹⁶For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood.

¹⁷Surely, in vain the net is spread In the sight of any bird;

¹⁸But they lie in wait for their own blood, They lurk secretly for their own lives.

¹⁹So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; It takes away the life of its owners.

²⁰Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises her voice in the open squares.

²¹She cries out in the chief concourses, At the openings of the gates in the city She speaks her words:

²²“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, And fools hate knowledge.

²³Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.

²⁴Because I have called and you refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded,

²⁵Because you disdained all my counsel, And would have none of my rebuke,

²⁶I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your terror comes,

²⁷When your terror comes like a storm, And your destruction comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you.

²⁸“Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.

²⁹Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the LORD,

³⁰They would have none of my counsel And despised my every rebuke.

³¹Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, And be filled to the full with their own fancies.

³²For the turning away of the simple will slay them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them;

³³But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil.”

¹My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you,

²So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding;

³Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding,

⁴If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures;

⁵Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God.

⁶For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;

⁷He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly;

⁸He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints.

⁹Then you will understand righteousness and justice, Equity and every good path.

¹⁰When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul,

¹¹Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you,

¹²To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things,

¹³From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness;

¹⁴Who rejoice in doing evil, And delight in the perversity of the wicked;

¹⁵Whose ways are crooked, And who are devious in their paths;

¹⁶To deliver you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words,

¹⁷Who forsakes the companion of her youth, And forgets the covenant of her God.

¹⁸For her house leads down to death, And her paths to the dead;

¹⁹None who go to her return, Nor do they regain the paths of life—

²⁰So you may walk in the way of goodness, And keep to the paths of righteousness.

²¹For the upright will dwell in the land, And the blameless will remain in it;

²²But the wicked will be cut off from the earth, And the unfaithful will be uprooted from it.
