Ecclesiastes 11,12; Song of Solomon 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8; Isaiah 1,2,3
Ecclesiastes 11
1Cast your bread on the surface of the waters, for you will find it after many days.
2Divide your portion to seven, or even to eight, for you do not know what misfortune may occur on the earth.
3If the clouds are full, they pour out rain on the earth; and whether a tree falls toward the south or toward the north, wherever the tree falls, there it lies.
4One who watches the wind will not sow and one who looks at the clouds will not harvest.
5Just as you do not know the path of the wind, and how bones are formed in the womb of the pregnant woman, so you do not know the activity of God who makes everything.
6Sow your seed in the morning and do not be idle in the evening, for you do not know whether one or the other will succeed, or whether both of them alike will be good.
7The light is pleasant, and it is good for the eyes to see the sun.
8Indeed, if a person lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember the days of darkness, for they will be many. Everything that is to come will be futility.
9Rejoice, young man, during your childhood, and let your heart be pleasant during the days of young manhood. And follow the impulses of your heart and the desires of your eyes. Yet know that God will bring you to judgment for all these things.
10So remove sorrow from your heart and keep pain away from your body, because childhood and the prime of life are fleeting.
Ecclesiastes 12
1Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years approach when you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”;
2before the sun and the light, the moon and the stars are darkened, and clouds return after the rain;
3on the day that the watchmen of the house tremble, and strong men are bent over, the grinders stop working because they are few, and those who look through windows grow dim;
4and the doors on the street are shut as the sound of the grinding mill is low, and one will arise at the sound of the bird, and all the daughters of song will sing softly.
5Furthermore, people are afraid of a high place and of terrors on the road; the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper drags itself along, and the caper berry is ineffective. For man goes to his eternal home while the mourners move around in the street.
6Remember your Creator before the silver cord is broken and the golden bowl is crushed, the pitcher by the spring is shattered and the wheel at the cistern is crushed;
7then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.
8“Futility of futilities,” says the Preacher, “all is futility!”
9In addition to being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge; and he pondered, searched out, and arranged many proverbs.
10The Preacher sought to find delightful words and to write words of truth correctly.
11The words of the wise are like goads, and masters of these collections are like driven nails; they are given by one Shepherd.
12But beyond this, my son, be warned: the writing of many books is endless, and excessive study is wearying to the body.
13The conclusion, when everything has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.
14For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.
Song of Solomon 1
1The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s.
2“May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is sweeter than wine.
3Your oils have a pleasing fragrance, Your name is like purified oil; Therefore the young women love you.
4Draw me after you and let’s run together! The king has brought me into his chambers.” “We will rejoice in you and be joyful; We will praise your love more than wine. Rightly do they love you.”
5“I am black and beautiful, You daughters of Jerusalem, Like the tents of Kedar, Like the curtains of Solomon.
6Do not stare at me because I am dark, For the sun has tanned me. My mother’s sons were angry with me; They made me caretaker of the vineyards, But I have not taken care of my own vineyard.
7Tell me, you whom my soul loves, Where do you pasture your flock, Where do you have it lie down at noon? For why should I be like one who veils herself Beside the flocks of your companions?”
8“If you yourself do not know, Most beautiful among women, Go out on the trail of the flock, And pasture your young goats By the tents of the shepherds.
9“To me, my darling, you are like My mare among the chariots of Pharaoh.
10Your cheeks are delightful with jewelry, Your neck with strings of beads.”
11“We will make for you jewelry of gold With beads of silver.”
12“While the king was at his table, My perfume gave forth its fragrance.
13My beloved is to me a pouch of myrrh Which lies all night between my breasts.
14My beloved is to me a cluster of henna blossoms In the vineyards of Engedi.”
15“How beautiful you are, my darling, How beautiful you are! Your eyes are like doves.”
16“How handsome you are, my beloved, And so delightful! Indeed, our bed is luxuriant!
17The beams of our house are cedars, Our rafters, junipers.
Song of Solomon 2
1“I am the rose of Sharon, The lily of the valleys.”
2“Like a lily among the thorns, So is my darling among the young women.”
3“Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest, So is my beloved among the young men. In his shade I took great delight and sat down, And his fruit was sweet to my taste.
4He has brought me to his banquet hall, And his banner over me is love.
5Refresh me with raisin cakes, Sustain me with apples, Because I am lovesick.
6His left hand is under my head, And his right hand embraces me.”
7“Swear to me, you daughters of Jerusalem, By the gazelles or by the does of the field, That you will not disturb or awaken my love Until she pleases.”
8“Listen! My beloved! Behold, he is coming, Leaping on the mountains, Jumping on the hills!
9My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Behold, he is standing behind our wall, He is looking through the windows, He is peering through the lattice.
10“My beloved responded and said to me, ‘Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, And come along.
11For behold, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone.
12The blossoms have already appeared in the land; The time has arrived for pruning the vines, And the voice of the turtledove has been heard in our land.
13The fig tree has ripened its fruit, And the vines in blossom have given forth their fragrance. Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, And come along!’ ”
14“My dove, in the clefts of the rock, In the hiding place of the mountain pathway, Let me see how you look, Let me hear your voice; For your voice is pleasant, And you look delightful.”
15“Catch the foxes for us, The little foxes that are ruining the vineyards, While our vineyards are in blossom.”
16“My beloved is mine, and I am his; He pastures his flock among the lilies.
17Until the cool of the day, when the shadows flee, Turn, my beloved, and be like a gazelle Or a young stag on the mountains of Bether.”
Song of Solomon 3
1“On my bed night after night I sought him Whom my soul loves; I sought him but did not find him.
2‘I must arise now and go around in the city; In the streets and in the public squares I must seek him whom my soul loves.’ I sought him but did not find him.
3The watchmen who make the rounds in the city found me, And I said, ‘Have you seen him whom my soul loves?’
4Hardly had I left them When I found him whom my soul loves; I held on to him and would not let him go Until I had brought him to my mother’s house, And into the room of her who conceived me.”
5“Swear to me, you daughters of Jerusalem, By the gazelles or by the does of the field, That you will not disturb or awaken my love Until she pleases.”
6“What is this coming up from the wilderness Like columns of smoke, Perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, With all the scented powders of the merchant?
7Behold, it is the traveling couch of Solomon; Sixty warriors around it, Of the warriors of Israel.
8All of them are wielders of the sword, Expert in war; Each man has his sword at his side, Guarding against the terrors of the night.
9King Solomon has made for himself a sedan chair From the timber of Lebanon.
10He made its posts of silver, Its back of gold And its seat of purple fabric, With its interior lovingly inlaid By the daughters of Jerusalem.
11Go out, you daughters of Zion, And look at King Solomon with the crown With which his mother has crowned him On the day of his wedding, And on the day of the joy of his heart.”
Song of Solomon 4
1“How beautiful you are, my darling, How beautiful you are! Your eyes are like doves behind your veil; Your hair is like a flock of goats That have descended from Mount Gilead.
2Your teeth are like a flock of newly shorn sheep Which have come up from their watering place, All of which bear twins, And not one among them has lost her young.
3Your lips are like a scarlet thread, And your mouth is beautiful. Your temples are like a slice of a pomegranate Behind your veil.
4Your neck is like the tower of David, Built with layers of stones On which are hung a thousand shields, All the round shields of the warriors.
5Your two breasts are like two fawns, Twins of a gazelle That graze among the lilies.
6Until the cool of the day When the shadows flee, I will go my way to the mountain of myrrh And to the hill of frankincense.
7“You are altogether beautiful, my darling, And there is no blemish on you.
8Come with me from Lebanon, my bride, You shall come with me from Lebanon. You shall come down from the summit of Amana, From the summit of Senir and Hermon, From the dens of lions, From the mountains of leopards.
9You have enchanted my heart, my sister, my bride; You have enchanted my heart with a single glance of your eyes, With a single strand of your necklace.
10How beautiful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much sweeter is your love than wine, And the fragrance of your oils Than that of all kinds of balsam oils!
11Your lips drip honey, my bride; Honey and milk are under your tongue, And the fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.
12A locked garden is my sister, my bride, A locked spring, a sealed fountain.
13Your branches are an orchard of pomegranates With delicious fruits, henna with nard plants,
14Nard and saffron, spice reed and cinnamon, With all the trees of frankincense, Myrrh, and aloes, along with all the finest balsam oils.
15You are a garden spring, A well of fresh water, And flowing streams from Lebanon.”
16“Awake, north wind, And come, wind of the south; Make my garden breathe out fragrance, May its balsam oils flow. May my beloved come into his garden And eat its delicious fruits!”
Song of Solomon 5
1“I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride; I have gathered my myrrh along with my balsam. I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, friends; Drink and drink deeply, lovers.”
2“I was asleep but my heart was awake. A voice! My beloved was knocking: ‘Open to me, my sister, my darling, My dove, my perfect one! For my head is drenched with dew, My locks with the dew drops of the night.’
3I have taken off my dress, How can I put it on again? I have washed my feet, How can I dirty them again?
4My beloved extended his hand through the opening, And my feelings were stirred for him.
5I arose to open to my beloved; And my hands dripped with myrrh, And my fingers with drops of myrrh, On the handles of the bolt.
6I opened to my beloved, But my beloved had turned away and had gone! My heart went out to him as he spoke. I searched for him but I did not find him; I called him but he did not answer me.
7The watchmen who make the rounds in the city found me, They struck me and wounded me; The guards of the walls took my shawl away from me.
8Swear to me, you daughters of Jerusalem, If you find my beloved, As to what you will tell him: For I am lovesick.”
9“What kind of beloved is your beloved, O most beautiful among women? What kind of beloved is your beloved, That you make us swear in this way?”
10“My beloved is dazzling and reddish, Outstanding among ten thousand.
11His head is like gold, pure gold; His locks are like clusters of dates And black as a raven.
12His eyes are like doves Beside streams of water, Bathed in milk, And perched in their setting.
13His cheeks are like a bed of balsam, Banks of herbal spices; His lips are lilies Dripping with drops of myrrh.
14His hands are rods of gold Set with topaz; His abdomen is panels of ivory Covered with sapphires.
15His thighs are pillars of alabaster Set on pedestals of pure gold; His appearance is like Lebanon, Choice as the cedars.
16His mouth is full of sweetness. And he is wholly desirable. This is my beloved and this is my friend, You daughters of Jerusalem.”
Song of Solomon 6
1“Where has your beloved gone, O most beautiful among women? Where has your beloved turned, That we may seek him with you?”
2“My beloved has gone down to his garden, To the beds of balsam, To pasture his flock in the gardens And gather lilies.
3I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine, He who pastures his flock among the lilies.”
4“You are as beautiful as Tirzah, my darling, As lovely as Jerusalem, As awesome as an army with banners.
5Turn your eyes away from me, For they have confused me; Your hair is like a flock of goats That have descended from Gilead.
6Your teeth are like a flock of ewes That have come up from their watering place, All of which bear twins, And not one among them has lost her young.
7Your temples are like a slice of a pomegranate Behind your veil.
8There are sixty queens and eighty concubines, And young women without number;
9But my dove, my perfect one, is unique: She is her mother’s only daughter; She is the pure child of the one who gave birth to her. The young women saw her and called her blessed, The queens and the concubines also, and they praised her, saying,
10‘Who is this who looks down like the dawn, As beautiful as the full moon, As pure as the sun, As awesome as an army with banners?’
11I went down to the orchard of nut trees To see the plants of the valley, To see whether the vine had grown Or the pomegranates had bloomed.
12Before I was aware, my soul set me Over the chariots of my noble people.”
13“Come back, come back, O Shulammite; Come back, come back, so that we may look at you!” “Why should you look at the Shulammite, As at the dance of the two armies?
Song of Solomon 7
1“How beautiful are your feet in sandals, Prince’s daughter! The curves of your hips are like jewels, The work of the hands of an artist.
2Your navel is like a round goblet That never lacks mixed wine; Your belly is like a heap of wheat, Surrounded with lilies.
3Your two breasts are like two fawns, Twins of a gazelle.
4Your neck is like a tower of ivory, Your eyes like the pools in Heshbon By the gate of Bath-rabbim; Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon, Which looks toward Damascus.
5Your head crowns you like Carmel, And the flowing hair of your head is like purple threads; The king is captivated by your tresses.
6How beautiful and how delightful you are, My love, with all your delights!
7Your stature is like a palm tree, And your breasts are like its clusters.
8I said, ‘I will climb the palm tree, I will grasp its fruit stalks.’ Oh, may your breasts be like clusters of the vine, And the fragrance of your breath like apples,
9And your mouth like the best wine!” “It goes down smoothly for my beloved, Flowing gently through the lips of those who are asleep.
10“I am my beloved’s, And his desire is for me.
11Come, my beloved, let’s go out to the country, Let’s spend the night in the villages.
12Let’s rise early and go to the vineyards; Let’s see whether the vine has grown And its buds have opened, And whether the pomegranates have bloomed. There I will give you my love.
13The mandrakes have given forth fragrance; And over our doors are all delicious fruits, New as well as old, Which I have saved for you, my beloved.
Song of Solomon 8
1“Oh that you were like a brother to me Who nursed at my mother’s breasts. If I found you outdoors, I would kiss you; No one would despise me, either.
2I would lead you and bring you Into the house of my mother, who used to instruct me; I would give you spiced wine to drink from the juice of my pomegranates.
3Let his left hand be under my head, And his right hand embrace me.”
4“Swear to me, you daughters of Jerusalem: Do not disturb or awaken my love Until she pleases.”
5“Who is this coming up from the wilderness, Leaning on her beloved?” “Beneath the apple tree I awakened you; There your mother went into labor with you, There she was in labor and gave birth to you.
6Put me like a seal over your heart, Like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, Jealousy is as severe as Sheol; Its flames are flames of fire, The flame of the LORD.
7Many waters cannot quench love, Nor will rivers flood over it; If a man were to give all the riches of his house for love, It would be utterly despised.”
8“We have a little sister, And she has no breasts; What shall we do for our sister On the day when she is spoken for?
9If she is a wall, We will build on her a battlement of silver; But if she is a door, We will barricade her with planks of cedar.”
10“I was a wall, and my breasts were like towers; Then I became in his eyes as one who finds peace.
11Solomon had a vineyard at Baal-hamon; He entrusted the vineyard to caretakers. Each one was to bring a thousand shekels of silver for its fruit.
12My very own vineyard is at my disposal; The thousand shekels are for you, Solomon, And two hundred are for those who take care of its fruit.”
13“You who sit in the gardens: My companions are listening for your voice— Let me hear it!”
14“Hurry, my beloved, And be like a gazelle or a young stag On the mountains of balsam trees!”
Isaiah 1
1The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem, which he saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
2Listen, heavens, and hear, earth; For the LORD has spoken: “Sons I have raised and brought up, But they have revolted against Me.
3An ox knows its owner, And a donkey its master’s manger, But Israel does not know, My people do not understand.”
4Oh, sinful nation, People weighed down with guilt, Offspring of evildoers, Sons who act corruptly! They have abandoned the LORD, They have despised the Holy One of Israel, They have turned away from Him.
5Where will you be stricken again, As you continue in your rebellion? The entire head is sick And the entire heart is faint.
6From the sole of the foot even to the head There is nothing healthy in it, Only bruises, slashes, and raw wounds; Not pressed out nor bandaged, Nor softened with oil.
7Your land is desolate, Your cities are burned with fire; As for your fields, strangers are devouring them in front of you; It is desolation, as overthrown by strangers.
8The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, Like a watchman’s hut in a cucumber field, like a city under watch.
9If the LORD of armies Had not left us a few survivors, We would be like Sodom, We would be like Gomorrah.
10Hear the word of the LORD, You rulers of Sodom; Listen to the instruction of our God, You people of Gomorrah!
11“What are your many sacrifices to Me?” Says the LORD. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fattened cattle; And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs, or goats.
12When you come to appear before Me, Who requires of you this trampling of My courtyards?
13Do not go on bringing your worthless offerings, Incense is an abomination to Me. New moon and Sabbath, the proclamation of an assembly— I cannot endure wrongdoing and the festive assembly.
14I hate your new moon festivals and your appointed feasts, They have become a burden to Me; I am tired of bearing them.
15So when you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; Yes, even though you offer many prayers, I will not be listening. Your hands are covered with blood.
16“Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight. Stop doing evil,
17Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor, Obtain justice for the orphan, Plead for the widow’s case.
18“Come now, and let us debate your case,” Says the LORD, “Though your sins are as scarlet, They shall become as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be like wool.
19If you are willing and obedient, You will eat the best of the land;
20But if you refuse and rebel, You will be devoured by the sword.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
21How the faithful city has become a prostitute, She who was full of justice! Righteousness once dwelt in her, But now murderers.
22Your silver has become waste matter, Your drink diluted with water.
23Your rulers are rebels And companions of thieves; Everyone loves a bribe And chases after gifts. They do not obtain justice for the orphan, Nor does the widow’s case come before them.
24Therefore the Lord GOD of armies, The Mighty One of Israel, declares, “Ah, I will have satisfaction against My adversaries, And avenge Myself on My enemies.
25I will also turn My hand against you, And smelt away your impurities as with lye; And I will remove all your slag.
26Then I will restore your judges as at first, And your counselors as at the beginning; After that you will be called the city of righteousness, A faithful city.”
27Zion will be redeemed with justice And her repentant ones with righteousness.
28But wrongdoers and sinners together will be broken, And those who abandon the LORD will come to an end.
29You certainly will be ashamed of the oaks which you have desired, And you will be embarrassed by the gardens which you have chosen.
30For you will be like an oak whose leaf withers away, Or like a garden that has no water.
31The strong man will become like flax fiber, And his work a spark. So they shall both burn together And there will be no one to extinguish them.
Isaiah 2
1The word which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
2Now it will come about that In the last days The mountain of the house of the LORD Will be established as the chief of the mountains, And will be raised above the hills; And all the nations will stream to it.
3And many peoples will come and say, “Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; So that He may teach us about His ways, And that we may walk in His paths.” For the law will go out from Zion And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
4And He will judge between the nations, And will mediate for many peoples; And they will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning knives. Nation will not lift up a sword against nation, And never again will they learn war.
5Come, house of Jacob, and let’s walk in the light of the LORD.
6For You have abandoned Your people, the house of Jacob, Because they are filled with influences from the east, And they are soothsayers like the Philistines. They also strike bargains with the children of foreigners.
7Their land has also been filled with silver and gold And there is no end to their treasures; Their land has also been filled with horses, And there is no end to their chariots.
8Their land has also been filled with idols; They worship the work of their hands, That which their fingers have made.
9So the common person has been humbled And the person of importance has been brought low, But do not forgive them.
10Enter the rocky place and hide in the dust From the terror of the LORD and from the splendor of His majesty.
11The proud look of humanity will be brought low, And the arrogance of people will be humbled; And the LORD alone will be exalted on that day.
12For the LORD of armies will have a day of reckoning Against everyone who is arrogant and haughty, And against everyone who is lifted up, That he may be brought low.
13And it will be against all the cedars of Lebanon that are lofty and lifted up, Against all the oaks of Bashan,
14Against all the lofty mountains, Against all the hills that are lifted up,
15Against every high tower, Against every fortified wall,
16Against all the ships of Tarshish And against all the delightful ships.
17And the pride of humanity will be humbled And the arrogance of people will be brought low; And the LORD alone will be exalted on that day,
18And the idols will completely vanish.
19People will go into caves of the rocks And into holes in the ground Away from the terror of the LORD And the splendor of His majesty, When He arises to terrify the earth.
20On that day people will throw away to the moles and the bats Their idols of silver and their idols of gold, Which they made for themselves to worship,
21In order to go into the clefts of the rocks and the crannies of the cliffs Before the terror of the LORD and the splendor of His majesty, When He arises to terrify the earth.
22Take no account of man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils; For why should he be esteemed?
Isaiah 3
1For behold, the Lord GOD of armies is going to remove from Jerusalem and Judah Both supply and support, the entire supply of bread And the entire supply of water;
2The mighty man and the warrior, The judge and the prophet, The diviner and the elder,
3The captain of fifty and the esteemed person, The counselor and the expert artisan, And the skillful enchanter.
4And I will make mere boys their leaders, And mischievous children will rule over them,
5And the people will be oppressed, Each one by another, and each one by his neighbor; The youth will assault the elder, And the contemptible person will assault the one honored.
6When a man lays hold of his brother in his father’s house, saying, “You have a cloak, you shall be our ruler! And these ruins will be under your authority,”
7He will protest on that day, saying, “I will not be your healer, For in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; You should not appoint me ruler of the people.”
8For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen, Because their speech and their actions are against the LORD, To rebel against His glorious presence.
9The expression of their faces testifies against them, And they display their sin like Sodom; They do not even conceal it. Woe to them! For they have done evil to themselves.
10Say to the righteous that it will go well for them, For they will eat the fruit of their actions.
11Woe to the wicked! It will go badly for him, For what he deserves will be done to him.
12My people! Their oppressors treat them violently, And women rule over them. My people! Those who guide you lead you astray And confuse the direction of your paths.
13The LORD arises to contend, And stands to judge the people.
14The LORD enters into judgment with the elders and leaders of His people, “It is you who have devoured the vineyard; The goods stolen from the poor are in your houses.
15What do you mean by crushing My people And oppressing the face of the poor?” Declares the Lord GOD of armies.
16Moreover, the LORD said, “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty And walk with heads held high and seductive eyes, And go along with mincing steps And jingle the anklets on their feet,
17The Lord will afflict the scalp of the daughters of Zion with scabs, And the LORD will make their foreheads bare.”
18On that day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, headbands, crescent ornaments,
19dangling earrings, bracelets, veils,
20headdresses, ankle chains, sashes, perfume boxes, amulets,
21finger rings, nose rings,
22festive robes, outer garments, shawls, purses,
23papyrus garments, undergarments, headbands, and veils.
24Now it will come about that instead of balsam oil there will be a stench; Instead of a belt, a rope; Instead of well-set hair, a plucked-out scalp; Instead of fine clothes, a robe of sackcloth; And branding instead of beauty.
25Your men will fall by the sword And your mighty ones in battle.
26And her gates will lament and mourn, And she will sit deserted on the ground.
