Psalms 104-106
Psalms 104
1Bless and affectionately praise the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
2[You are the One] who covers Yourself with light as with a garment, Who stretches out the heavens like a tent curtain,
3Who lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters [above the firmament], Who makes the clouds His chariot, Who walks on the wings of the wind,
4Who makes winds His messengers, Flames of fire His ministers.
5He established the earth on its foundations, So that it will not be moved forever and ever.
6You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters were standing above the mountains.
7At Your rebuke they fled; At the sound of Your thunder they hurried away.
8The mountains rose, the valleys sank down To the place which You established for them.
9You set a boundary [for the waters] that they may not cross over, So that they will not return to cover the earth.
10You send springs into the valleys; Their waters flow among the mountains.
11They give drink to every beast of the field; The wild donkeys quench their thirst there.
12Beside them the birds of the heavens have their nests; They lift up their voices and sing among the branches.
13He waters the mountains from His upper chambers; The earth is satisfied with the fruit of His works.
14He causes grass to grow for the cattle, And all that the earth produces for cultivation by man, So that he may bring food from the earth—
15And wine which makes the heart of man glad, So that he may make his face glisten with oil, And bread to sustain and strengthen man's heart.
16The trees of the LORD drink their fill, The cedars of Lebanon which He has planted,
17Where the birds make their nests; As for the stork, the fir trees are her house.
18The high mountains are for the wild goats; The rocks are a refuge for the shephanim.
19He made the moon for the seasons; The sun knows the [exact] place of its setting.
20You [O LORD] make darkness and it becomes night, In which prowls about every wild beast of the forest.
21The young lions roar after their prey And seek their food from God.
22When the sun arises, they withdraw And lie down in their dens.
23Man goes out to his work And remains at his labor until evening.
24O LORD, how many and varied are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all; The earth is full of Your riches and Your creatures.
25There is the sea, great and broad, In which are swarms without number, Creatures both small and great.
26There the ships [of the sea] sail, And Leviathan [the sea monster], which You have formed to play there.
27They all wait for You To give them their food in its appointed season.
28You give it to them, they gather it up; You open Your hand, they are filled and satisfied with good [things].
29You hide Your face, they are dismayed; You take away their breath, they die And return to their dust.
30You send out Your Spirit, they are created; You renew the face of the ground.
31May the glory of the LORD endure forever; May the LORD rejoice and be glad in His works—
32He looks at the earth, and it trembles; He touches the mountains, and they smoke.
33I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
34May my meditation be sweet and pleasing to Him; As for me, I will rejoice and be glad in the LORD.
35Let sinners be consumed from the earth, And let the wicked be no more. Bless and affectionately praise the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD! (Hallelujah!)
Psalms 105
1O give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the people.
2Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; Speak of all His wonderful acts and devoutly praise them.
3Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those who seek and require the LORD [as their most essential need] rejoice.
4Seek and deeply long for the LORD and His strength [His power, His might]; Seek and deeply long for His face and His presence continually.
5Remember [with awe and gratitude] the wonderful things which He has done, His amazing deeds and the judgments uttered by His mouth [on His enemies, as in Egypt],
6O you offspring of Abraham, His servant, O you sons of Jacob, His chosen ones!
7He is the LORD our God; His judgments are in all the earth.
8He has remembered His covenant forever, The word which He commanded and established to a thousand generations,
9The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His sworn oath to Isaac,
10Which He confirmed to Jacob as a statute, To Israel as an everlasting covenant,
11Saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan As the measured portion of your inheritance."
12When there were only a few men in number, Very few [in fact], and strangers in it;
13And they wandered from one nation to another, From one kingdom to another people,
14He allowed no man to oppress them; He rebuked kings for their sakes, saying,
15"Do not touch My anointed ones, And do My prophets no harm."
16And He called for a famine upon the land [of Egypt]; He cut off every source of bread.
17He sent a man before them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
18His feet they hurt with shackles; He was put in chains of iron,
19Until the time that his word [of prophecy regarding his brothers] came true, The word of the LORD tested and refined him.
20The king sent and released him, The ruler of the peoples [of Egypt], and set him free.
21He made Joseph lord of his house And ruler of all his possessions,
22To imprison his princes at his will, That he might teach his elders wisdom.
23Israel also came into Egypt; Thus Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
24There the LORD greatly increased [the number of] His people, And made them more powerful than their enemies.
25He turned the heart [of the Egyptians] to hate His people, To deal craftily with His servants.
26He sent Moses His servant, And Aaron, whom He had chosen.
27They exhibited His wondrous signs among them, Great miracles in the land of Ham (Egypt).
28He sent [thick, oppressive] darkness and made the land dark; And Moses and Aaron did not rebel against His words.
29He turned Egypt's waters into blood And caused their fish to die.
30Their land swarmed with frogs, Even in the chambers of their kings.
31He spoke, and there came swarms of flies And gnats in all their territory.
32He gave them hail for rain, With flaming fire in their land.
33He struck their vines also and their fig trees, And shattered the [ice-laden] trees of their territory.
34He spoke, and the [migratory] locusts came, And the young locusts, even without number,
35And ate up all the vegetation in their land, And devoured the fruit of their ground.
36He also struck down all the firstborn in their land, The first fruits and chief substance of all their strength.
37He brought the sons of Israel out [of Egypt] with silver and gold, And among their tribes there was not one who stumbled.
38Egypt was glad when they departed, For the dread and fear of them had fallen on the Egyptians.
39The LORD spread a cloud as a covering [by day], And a fire to illumine the night.
40The Israelites asked, and He brought quail, And satisfied them with the bread of heaven.
41He opened the rock and water flowed out; It ran in the dry places like a river.
42For He remembered His holy word To Abraham His servant;
43He brought out His people with joy, And His chosen ones with a joyful shout,
44He gave them the lands of the nations [of Canaan], So that they would possess the fruits of those peoples' labor,
45So that they might observe His precepts And keep His laws [obediently accepting and honoring and valuing them]. Praise the LORD! (Hallelujah!)
Psalms 106
1Praise the LORD! (Hallelujah!) Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His mercy and lovingkindness endure forever!
2Who can put into words the mighty deeds of the LORD? Or who can proclaim all His praise [that is due Him]?
3Blessed are those who observe justice [by honoring God's precepts], Who practice righteousness at all times.
4Remember me, O LORD, when You favor Your people. Visit me with Your salvation [when You rescue them],
5That I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones, That I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, That I may glory with Your inheritance.
6We have sinned like our fathers; We have committed iniquity, we have behaved wickedly.
7Our fathers in Egypt did not understand nor appreciate Your miracles; They did not remember the abundance of Your mercies nor imprint Your lovingkindnesses on their hearts, But they were rebellious at the sea, at the Red Sea.
8Nevertheless He saved them for His name's sake, That He might make His [supreme] power known.
9He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up; And He led them through the depths as through a pasture.
10So He saved them from the hand of the one that hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the [Egyptian] enemy.
11And the waters covered their adversaries; Not one of them was left.
12Then Israel believed in [the validity of] His words; They sang His praise.
13But they quickly forgot His works; They did not [patiently] wait for His counsel and purpose [to be revealed regarding them],
14But lusted intensely in the wilderness And tempted God [with their insistent desires] in the desert.
15So He gave them their request, But sent a wasting disease among them.
16They envied Moses in the camp, And Aaron [the high priest], the holy one of the LORD,
17Therefore the earth opened and swallowed Dathan, And engulfed the company of Abiram.
18And a fire broke out in their company; The flame consumed the wicked.
19They made a calf in Horeb (Sinai) And worshiped a cast image.
20Thus they exchanged [the true God who was] their glory For the image of an ox that eats grass.
21They forgot God their Savior, Who had done such great things in Egypt,
22Wonders in the land of Ham, Awesome things at the Red Sea.
23Therefore He said He would destroy them, [And He would have done so] had not Moses, His chosen one, stepped into the gap before Him, To turn away His wrath from destroying them.
24Then they despised the pleasant land [of Canaan]; They did not believe in His word nor rely on it,
25But they sulked and complained in their tents; They did not listen to the voice of the LORD.
26Therefore He lifted up His hand [swearing] to them, That He would cause them to fall in the wilderness,
27And that He would cast out their descendants among the nations And scatter them in the lands [of the earth].
28They joined themselves also to [the idol] Baal of Peor, And ate sacrifices offered to the dead.
29Thus they provoked Him to anger with their practices, And a plague broke out among them.
30Then Phinehas [the priest] stood up and interceded, And so the plague was halted.
31And that was credited to him for righteousness, To all generations forever.
32They provoked Him to anger at the waters of Meribah, So that it went hard with Moses on their account;
33Because they were rebellious against His Spirit, Moses spoke recklessly with his lips.
34They did not destroy the [pagan] peoples [in Canaan], As the LORD commanded them,
35But they mingled with the [idolatrous] nations And learned their ways,
36And served their idols, Which became a [dreadful] snare to them.
37They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons
38And shed innocent blood, Even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; And the land was polluted with their blood.
39In this way they became unclean in their practices; They played the prostitute in their own deeds [by giving their worship, which belongs to God alone, to other "gods"].
40Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against His people And He detested His own inheritance.
41He gave them into the hands of the nations, And those who hated them ruled over them.
42Their enemies also oppressed them, And they were subdued under the [powerful] hand of their enemies.
43Many times He rescued them; But they were rebellious in their counsel, And sank down in their wickedness.
44Nevertheless He looked [sympathetically] at their distress When He heard their cry;
45And He remembered His covenant for their sake, And relented [rescinding their sentence] according to the greatness of His lovingkindness [when they cried out to Him],
46He also made them objects of compassion Among those who had carried them away captive.
47Save us, O LORD our God, And gather us from among the nations, That we may give thanks to Your holy name And glory in praising You.
48Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, From everlasting even to everlasting. And let all the people say, "Amen." Praise the LORD! (Hallelujah!)
