Ephesians 4-6

Ephesians 4

1Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,

2with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,

3being diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you also were called in one hope of your calling;

5one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

6one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

7But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

8Therefore it says, “WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE the captives, AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO PEOPLE.”

9(Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth?

10He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)

11And He gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, some as pastors and teachers,

12for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ;

13until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.

14As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of people, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;

15but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, that is, Christ,

16from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

17So I say this, and affirm in the Lord, that you are to no longer walk just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their minds,

18being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;

19and they, having become callous, have given themselves up to indecent behavior for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.

20But you did not learn Christ in this way,

21if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus,

22that, in reference to your former way of life, you are to rid yourselves of the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,

23and that you are to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,

24and to put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

25Therefore, ridding yourselves of falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you with his neighbor, because we are parts of one another.

26BE ANGRY, AND yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,

27and do not give the devil an opportunity.

28The one who steals must no longer steal; but rather he must labor, producing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with the one who has need.

29Let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but if there is any good word for edification according to the need of the moment, say that, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

30Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31All bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander must be removed from you, along with all malice.

32Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

Ephesians 5

1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;

2and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

3But sexual immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among saints;

4and there must be no filthiness or foolish talk, or vulgar joking, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

5For this you know with certainty, that no sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, which amounts to an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

6See that no one deceives you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

7Therefore do not become partners with them;

8for you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light

9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),

10as you try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

11Do not participate in the useless deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;

12for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.

13But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.

14For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.”

15So then, be careful how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise,

16making the most of your time, because the days are evil.

17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

18And do not get drunk with wine, in which there is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,

19speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your hearts to the Lord;

20always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to our God and Father;

21and subject yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ.

22Wives, subject yourselves to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

23For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.

24But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

26so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,

27that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.

28So husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;

29for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,

30because we are parts of His body.

31FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND HIS MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.

32This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.

33Nevertheless, as for you individually, each husband is to love his own wife the same as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.

Ephesians 6

1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

2HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise),

3SO THAT IT MAY TURN OUT WELL FOR YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH.

4Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

5Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ;

6not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.

7With goodwill render service, as to the Lord, and not to people,

8knowing that whatever good thing each one does, he will receive this back from the Lord, whether slave or free.

9And masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.

11Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

14Stand firm therefore, having belted your waist with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

15and having strapped on your feet the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18With every prayer and request, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be alert with all perseverance and every request for all the saints,

19and pray in my behalf, that speech may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,

20for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

21Now, so that you also may know about my circumstances as to what I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make everything known to you.

22I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us, and that he may comfort your hearts.

23Peace be to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

24Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love.
