Chronological Plan

Matthew 4; Luke 4-5; John 1:15-51

Matthew 4

1Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

2After he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

3Then the tempter approached him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

4He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

5Then the devil took him to the holy city, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple,

6and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will give his angels orders concerning you, and they will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

7Jesus told him, “It is also written: Do not test the Lord your God.

8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.

9And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.”

10Then Jesus told him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.

11Then the devil left him, and angels came and began to serve him.

12When he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.

13He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.

14This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

15Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, along the road by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.

16The people who live in darkness have seen a great light, and for those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.

17From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

18As he was walking along the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter), and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea — for they were fishermen.

19“Follow me,” he told them, “and I will make you fish for people.”

20Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with Zebedee their father, preparing their nets, and he called them.

22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

23Now Jesus began to go all over Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

24Then the news about him spread throughout Syria. So they brought to him all those who were afflicted, those suffering from various diseases and intense pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralytics. And he healed them.

25Large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.

Luke 4

1Then Jesus left the Jordan, full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness

2for forty days to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, he was hungry.

3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

4But Jesus answered him, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone.

5So he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

6The devil said to him, “I will give you their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me, and I can give it to anyone I want.

7If you, then, will worship me, all will be yours.”

8And Jesus answered him, “It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.

9So he took him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here.

10For it is written: He will give his angels orders concerning you, to protect you,

11and they will support you with their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

12And Jesus answered him, “It is said: Do not test the Lord your God.

13After the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.

14Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity.

15He was teaching in their synagogues, being praised by everyone.

16He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. As usual, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read.

17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written:

18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed,

19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

20He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.

21He began by saying to them, “Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled.”

22They were all speaking well of him and were amazed by the gracious words that came from his mouth; yet they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

23Then he said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Doctor, heal yourself. What we’ve heard that took place in Capernaum, do here in your hometown also.’”

24He also said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

25But I say to you, there were certainly many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months while a great famine came over all the land.

26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them except a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.

27And in the prophet Elisha’s time, there were many in Israel who had leprosy, and yet not one of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”

28When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was enraged.

29They got up, drove him out of town, and brought him to the edge of the hill that their town was built on, intending to hurl him over the cliff.

30But he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.

31Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbath.

32They were astonished at his teaching because his message had authority.

33In the synagogue there was a man with an unclean demonic spirit who cried out with a loud voice,

34“Leave us alone! What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”

35But Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be silent and come out of him!” And throwing him down before them, the demon came out of him without hurting him at all.

36Amazement came over them all, and they were saying to one another, “What is this message? For he commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out!”

37And news about him began to go out to every place in the vicinity.

38After he left the synagogue, he entered Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him about her.

39So he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and began to serve them.

40When the sun was setting, all those who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to him. As he laid his hands on each one of them, he healed them.

41Also, demons were coming out of many, shouting and saying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.

42When it was day, he went out and made his way to a deserted place. But the crowds were searching for him. They came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them.

43But he said to them, “It is necessary for me to proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because I was sent for this purpose.”

44And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

Luke 5

1As the crowd was pressing in on Jesus to hear God’s word, he was standing by Lake Gennesaret.

2He saw two boats at the edge of the lake; the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets.

3He got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the land. Then he sat down and was teaching the crowds from the boat.

4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”

5“Master,” Simon replied, “we’ve worked hard all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so, I’ll let down the nets.”

6When they did this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets began to tear.

7So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them; they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’s knees and said, “Go away from me, because I’m a sinful man, Lord!”

9For he and all those with him were amazed at the catch of fish they had taken,

10and so were James and John, Zebedee’s sons, who were Simon’s partners. “Don’t be afraid,” Jesus told Simon. “From now on you will be catching people.”

11Then they brought the boats to land, left everything, and followed him.

12While he was in one of the towns, a man was there who had leprosy all over him. He saw Jesus, fell facedown, and begged him: “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

13Reaching out his hand, Jesus touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean,” and immediately the leprosy left him.

14Then he ordered him to tell no one: “But go and show yourself to the priest, and offer what Moses commanded for your cleansing as a testimony to them.”

15But the news about him spread even more, and large crowds would come together to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.

16Yet he often withdrew to deserted places and prayed.

17On one of those days while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and also from Jerusalem. And the Lord’s power to heal was in him.

18Just then some men came, carrying on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed. They tried to bring him in and set him down before him.

19Since they could not find a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the roof tiles into the middle of the crowd before Jesus.

20Seeing their faith he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”

21Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to think to themselves: “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

22But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus replied to them, “Why are you thinking this in your hearts?

23Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?

24But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”  — he told the paralyzed man, “I tell you: Get up, take your stretcher, and go home.”

25Immediately he got up before them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God.

26Then everyone was astounded, and they were giving glory to God. And they were filled with awe and said, “We have seen incredible things today.”

27After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, “Follow me.”

28So, leaving everything behind, he got up and began to follow him.

29Then Levi hosted a grand banquet for him at his house. Now there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were guests with them.

30But the Pharisees and their scribes were complaining to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

31Jesus replied to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a doctor, but those who are sick.

32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

33Then they said to him, “John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink.”

34Jesus said to them, “You can’t make the wedding guests fast while the groom is with them, can you?

35But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them — then they will fast in those days.”

36He also told them a parable: “No one tears a patch from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. Otherwise, not only will he tear the new, but also the piece from the new garment will not match the old.

37And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, it will spill, and the skins will be ruined.

38No, new wine is put into fresh wineskins.

39And no one, after drinking old wine, wants new, because he says, ‘The old is better.’”

John 1:15-51

15(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’”)

16Indeed, we have all received grace upon grace from his fullness,

17for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

18No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side —he has revealed him.

19This was John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?”

20He didn’t deny it but confessed: “I am not the Messiah.”

21“What then?” they asked him. “Are you Elijah?” “I am not,” he said. “Are you the Prophet?” “No,” he answered.

22“Who are you, then?” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself?”

23He said, “I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord  — just as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

25So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”

26“I baptize with water,” John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don’t know him.

27He is the one coming after me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.”

28All this happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

30This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’

31I didn’t know him, but I came baptizing with water so he might be revealed to Israel.”

32And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him.

33I didn’t know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on — he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

34I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

35The next day, John was standing with two of his disciples.

36When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

37The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus.

38When Jesus turned and noticed them following him, he asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39“Come and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.

40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him.

41He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated “the Christ”),

42and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter” ).

43The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip and told him, “Follow me.”

44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.

45Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets ): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”

46“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him. “Come and see,” Philip answered.

47Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”

48“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.

49“Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel!”

50Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”

51Then he said, “Truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
