Luke 24; John 20-21
Luke 24
1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.
2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
3They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes.
5So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. “Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men.
6“He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee,
7saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’?”
8And they remembered his words.
9Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest.
10Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things.
11But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.
12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went away, amazed at what had happened.
13Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.
14Together they were discussing everything that had taken place.
15And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus himself came near and began to walk along with them.
16But they were prevented from recognizing him.
17Then he asked them, “What is this dispute that you’re having with each other as you are walking?” And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.
18The one named Cleopas answered him, “Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that happened there in these days?”
19“What things?” he asked them. So they said to him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people,
20and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him.
21But we were hoping that he was the one who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it’s the third day since these things happened.
22Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb,
23and when they didn’t find his body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive.
24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”
25He said to them, “How foolish and slow you are to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
26Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
27Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.
28They came near the village where they were going, and he gave the impression that he was going farther.
29But they urged him, “Stay with us, because it’s almost evening, and now the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
30It was as he reclined at the table with them that he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
31Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight.
32They said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us?”
33That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven and those with them gathered together,
34who said, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!”
35Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
36As they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst. He said to them, “Peace to you!”
37But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost.
38“Why are you troubled?” he asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself! Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”
40Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
41But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
42So they gave him a piece of a broiled fish,
43and he took it and ate in their presence.
44He told them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you — that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
46He also said to them, “This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day,
47and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48You are witnesses of these things.
49And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.”
50Then he led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.
51And while he was blessing them, he left them and was carried up into heaven.
52After worshiping him, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
53And they were continually in the temple praising God.
John 20
1On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
2So she went running to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they’ve put him!”
3At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb.
4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first.
5Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.
6Then, following him, Simon Peter also came. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there.
7The wrapping that had been on his head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself.
8The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then also went in, saw, and believed.
9For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead.
10Then the disciples returned to the place where they were staying.
11But Mary stood outside the tomb, crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb.
12She saw two angels in white sitting where Jesus’s body had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet.
13They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “Because they’ve taken away my Lord,” she told them, “and I don’t know where they’ve put him.”
14Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus.
15“Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it that you’re seeking?” Supposing he was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve carried him away, tell me where you’ve put him, and I will take him away.”
16Jesus said to her, “Mary.” Turning around, she said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” — which means “Teacher.”
17“Don’t cling to me,” Jesus told her, “since I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them that I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”
18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what he had said to her.
19When it was evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because they feared the Jews. Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
20Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
21Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you. As the Father has sent me, I also send you.”
22After saying this, he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
24But Thomas (called “Twin” ), one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
25So the other disciples were telling him, “We’ve seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
26A week later his disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”
27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Don’t be faithless, but believe.”
28Thomas responded to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29Jesus said, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.”
30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book.
31But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
John 21
1After this, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way:
2Simon Peter, Thomas (called “Twin” ), Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples were together.
3“I’m going fishing,” Simon Peter said to them. “We’re coming with you,” they told him. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
4When daybreak came, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not know it was Jesus.
5“Friends,” Jesus called to them, “you don’t have any fish, do you?” “No,” they answered.
6“Cast the net on the right side of the boat,” he told them, “and you’ll find some.” So they did, and they were unable to haul it in because of the large number of fish.
7The disciple, the one Jesus loved, said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer clothing around him (for he had taken it off) and plunged into the sea.
8Since they were not far from land (about a hundred yards away), the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish.
9When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread.
10“Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus told them.
11So Simon Peter climbed up and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish — 153 of them. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.
12“Come and have breakfast,” Jesus told them. None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord.
13Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish.
14This was now the third time Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
15When they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said to him, “you know that I love you.” “Feed my lambs,” he told him.
16A second time he asked him, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” he said to him, “you know that I love you.” “Shepherd my sheep,” he told him.
17He asked him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved that he asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” “Feed my sheep,” Jesus said.
18“Truly I tell you, when you were younger, you would tie your belt and walk wherever you wanted. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will tie you and carry you where you don’t want to go.”
19He said this to indicate by what kind of death Peter would glorify God. After saying this, he told him, “Follow me.”
20So Peter turned around and saw the disciple Jesus loved following them, the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked, “Lord, who is the one that’s going to betray you?”
21When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?”
22“If I want him to remain until I come,” Jesus answered, “what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”
23So this rumor spread to the brothers and sisters that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not tell him that he would not die, but, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”
24This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.
25And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if every one of them were written down, I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books that would be written.
