Matthew 15; Mark 7

Matthew 15

1Then some Pharisees and scribes *came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,

2“Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”

3And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves also break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

4For God said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,’ and, ‘THE ONE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TOBE PUT TO DEATH.’

5But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has beengiven to God,

6he is not tohonor his father or mother.’ And by this you have invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

7You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you, by saying:

8‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.

9AND IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE COMMANDMENTS OF MEN.’ ”

10After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, “Hear and understand!

11It is not what enters the mouth that defiles the person, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles the person.”

12Then the disciples came and *said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?”

13But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.

14Leave them alone; they are blind guidesof blind people. And if a person who is blind guides another who is blind, both will fall into a pit.”

15Peter said to Him, “Explain the parable to us.”

16Jesus said, “Are you also still lacking in understanding?

17Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and iseliminated?

18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and those things defile the person.

19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, acts of adultery, other immoral sexual acts, thefts, false testimonies, andslanderous statements.

20These are the things that defile the person; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the person.”

21Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon.

22And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely demon-possessed.”

23But He did not answer her with even a word. And His disciples came up and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, because she keeps shouting at us!”

24But He answered and said, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

25But she came and began to bow down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”

26Yet He answered and said, “It is notgood to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

27And she said, “Yes, Lord; but please help, for even the dogs feed on the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”

28Then Jesus said to her, “O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed at once.

29Departing from there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee, and after going up on the mountain, He was sitting there.

30And large crowds came to Him bringing with them those who were limping, had impaired limbs, were blind, or were unable to speak, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He healed them.

31So the crowd was astonished as they saw those who were unable to speak talking, those with impaired limbs restored, those who were limping walking around, and those who were blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.

32Now Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I feel compassion for thepeople, because theyhave remained with Me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.”

33The disciples *said to Him, “Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?”

34And Jesus *said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”

35And He directed the people to sit down on the ground;

36and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and after giving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

37And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large baskets full.

38And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

39And sending away the crowds, Jesus got into the boat and came to the region of Magadan.

Mark 7

1The Pharisees and some of the scribes *gathered to Him after they came from Jerusalem,

2and saw that some of His disciples were eating their bread with unholy hands, that is, unwashed.

3(For the Pharisees and all the other Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thereby holding firmly to the tradition of the elders;

4and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they completely cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received as traditions to firmly hold, such as the washing of cups, pitchers, and copper pots.)

5And the Pharisees and the scribes *asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk in accordance with the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unholy hands?”

6But He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.

7AND IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE COMMANDMENTS OF MEN.’

8Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”

9He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.

10For Moses said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER’; and, ‘THE ONE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, ISCERTAINLY TO BE PUT TO DEATH’;

11but you say, ‘If a person says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is, given to God),’

12you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother;

13thereby invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

14After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:

15there is nothing outside the person which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which come out of the person are what defile the person.”

16

17And when He later entered a house, away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him about the parable.

18And He *said to them, “Are you so lacking in understanding as well? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the person from outside cannot defile him,

19because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, andis eliminated?” (Thereby He declared all foods clean.)

20And He was saying, “That which comes out of the person, that is what defiles the person.

21For from within, out of thehearts of people, come the evil thoughts, acts of sexual immorality, thefts, murders, acts of adultery,

22deeds of greed, wickedness, deceit, indecent behavior,envy, slander,pride, and foolishness.

23All these evil things come from within and defile the person.”

24Now Jesus got up and went from there to the region of Tyre. And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know about it; and yet He could not escape notice.

25But after hearing about Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet.

26Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician descent. And she repeatedly asked Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

27And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is notgood to take the children’s bread and throw it to thedogs.”

28But she answered and *said to Him, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children’s crumbs.”

29And He said to her, “Because of thisanswer, go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”

30And after going back to her home, she found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

31Again He left the region of Tyre and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, within the region of Decapolis.

32And they *brought to Him one who was deaf and had difficulty speaking, and they *begged Him to lay His hand on him.

33And Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers in his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva;

34and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He *said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!”

35And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly.

36And He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they continued to proclaim it.

37And they were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even those who are deaf hear, and those who are unable to talk, speak.”
