Matthew 1; Luke 2:1-38
Matthew 1
1The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son (descendant) of David, the son (descendant) of Abraham:
2Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers [who became the twelve tribes of Israel].
3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram.
4Ram was the father of Aminadab, Aminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon.
5Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse.
6Jesse was the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon by Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah.
7Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa.
8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah.
9Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah.
10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, and Amon the father of Josiah.
11Josiah became the father of Jeconiah [also called Coniah and Jehoiachin] and his brothers, at the time of the deportation (exile) to Babylon.
12After the deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel.
13Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor.
14Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud.
15Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob.
16Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah (Christ).
17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen; from David to the Babylonian deportation (exile), fourteen generations; and from the Babylonian deportation to the Messiah, fourteen generations.
18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by [the power of] the Holy Spirit.
19And Joseph her [promised] husband, being a just and righteous man and not wanting to expose her publicly to shame, planned to send her away and divorce her quietly.
20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21She will give birth to a Son, and you shall name Him Jesus (The LORD is salvation), for He will save His people from their sins."
22All this happened in order to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the prophet [Isaiah]:
23"Behold, thevirgin shall be with child and give birth to a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel"—which, when translated, means, "God with us."
24Then Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and he took Mary [to his home] as his wife,
25but he kept her a virgin until she had given birth to a Son [her firstborn child]; and he named Him Jesus (The LORD is salvation).
Luke 2:1-38
1Now in those days a decree went out from [the emperor] Caesar Augustus, that all the inhabited world (the Roman Empire) should be registered [in a census].
2This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
3And everyone went to register for the census, each to his own city.
4So Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,
5in order to register with Mary, who was betrothed to him, and was with child.
6While they were there [in Bethlehem], the time came for her to give birth,
7and she gave birth to her Son, her firstborn; and she wrapped Him in [ swaddling] cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no [private] room for them in the inn.
8In the same region there were shepherds staying out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord flashed and shone around them, and they were terribly frightened.
10But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people.
11For this day in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord (the Messiah).
12And this will be a sign for you [by which you will recognize Him]: you will find a Baby wrapped in [swaddling] cloths and lying in a manger."
13Then suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host (angelic army) praising God and saying,
14"Glory to God in the highest [heaven], And on earth peace among men with whom He is well-pleased."
15When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying one to another, "Let us go straight to Bethlehem, and see this [wonderful] thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us."
16So they went in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the Baby as He lay in the manger.
17And when they had seen this, they made known what had been told them about this Child,
18and all who heard it were astounded and wondered at what the shepherds told them.
19But Mary treasured all these things, giving careful thought to them and pondering them in her heart.
20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as it had been told them.
21At the end of eight days, when He was to be circumcised, He was named Jesus, the name given [to Him] by the angel [Gabriel] before He was conceived in the womb.
22And when the time for their purification came [that is, the mother's purification and the baby's dedication] according to the Law of Moses, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord [set apart as the Firstborn]
23(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male that opens the womb shall be called holy [set apart and dedicated] to the Lord)"
24and [they came also] to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord [to be appropriate for a family of modest means], "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons."
25Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout [carefully observing the divine Law], and looking for the Consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed).
27Prompted by the Spirit, he came into the temple [enclosure]; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for Him the custom required by the Law,
28Simeon took Him into his arms, and blessed and praised and thanked God, and said,
29"Now, Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to leave [this world] in peace, According to Your word;
30For my eyes have seen Your Salvation,
31Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
32A Light for revelation to the Gentiles [to disclose what was previously unknown], And [to bring] the praise and honor and glory of Your people Israel."
33And His [legal] father and His mother were amazed at what was said about Him.
34Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, "Listen carefully: this Child is appointed and destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign that is to be opposed—
35and a sword [of deep sorrow] will pierce through your own soul—so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
36There was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old, and had lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage,
37and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She did not leave the [area of the] temple, but was serving and worshiping night and day with fastings and prayers.
38She, too, came up at that very moment and began praising and giving thanks to God, and continued to speak of Him to all who were looking for the redemption and deliverance of Jerusalem.
