Matthew 23; Luke 20-21

Matthew 23

1Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples,

2saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses.

3Therefore, whatever they tell you, do andcomply with it all, but do not doas they do; for they say things and do not do them.

4And they tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as their finger.

5And they do all their deeds to be noticed by other people; for they broaden theirphylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments.

6And they love the place of honor at banquets, and the seats of honor in the synagogues,

7and personal greetings in the marketplaces, and being calledRabbi by the people.

8But as for you, do not be calledRabbi; for only One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers and sisters.

9And do not call anyone on earth your father; for only One is your Father, He who is in heaven.

10And do not be calledleaders; for only One is your Leader, that is, Christ.

11But the greatest of you shall be your servant.

12Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

13“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut the kingdom of heaven in front of people; for you do not enter it yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

14

15“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

16“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.’

17You fools and blind men! Which ismore important, the gold or thetemple that sanctified the gold?

18And you say, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing; but whoever swears by theoffering that is on it is obligated.’

19You blind men, which ismore important, theoffering or the altar that sanctifies theoffering?

20Therefore, the one who swears by the altar, swears both bythe altar and by everything on it.

21And the one who swears by thetemple, swears both bythe temple and by Him who dwells in it.

22And the one who swears byheaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.

23“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the Law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.

24You blind guides, whostrain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

25“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.

26You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that theoutside of it may also become clean.

27“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.

28So you too, outwardly appear righteous to people, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

30and you say, ‘If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’

31So you testify against yourselves, that you aresons of those who murdered the prophets.

32Fill up, then, the measure of the guilt of your fathers.

33You snakes, youoffspring of vipers, howwill you escape thesentence ofhell?

34“Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city,

35so that upon you will fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between thetemple and the altar.

36Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

37“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

38Behold, your house is being left to you desolate!

39For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘BLESSED IS THE ONE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!’ ”

Luke 20

1On one of the days while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted Him,

2and they declared, saying to Him, “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?”

3But He replied to them, “I will also ask you aquestion, and you tell Me:

4Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?”

5They discussed among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’

6But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, since they are convinced that John was a prophet.”

7And so they answered that they did not know where it came from.

8And Jesus said to them, “Neither am I telling you by what authority I do these things.”

9But He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it tovine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time.

10At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him his share of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

11And he proceeded to send another slave; but they beat him also and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.

12And he proceeded to send a third; but this one too they wounded and threw out.

13Now theowner of the vineyard said, ‘What am I to do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’

14But when the vine-growers saw him, they discussed with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let’s kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’

15And so they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will theowner of the vineyard do to them?

16He will come and put these vine-growers to death, and will give the vineyard to others.” However, when they heard this, they said, “May it never happen!”

17But Jesus looked at them and said, “Then what is this statement that has been written: ‘A STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS HAS BECOME THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE’?

18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”

19The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and yet they feared the people; for they were aware that He had spoken this parable against them.

20And so they watched Him closely, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could hand Him over to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor.

21And the spies questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You are not partial to anyone, but You teach the way of God on the basis of truth.

22Is it permissible for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”

23But He saw through their trickery and said to them,

24“Show Me adenarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.”

25And He said to them, “Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

26And they were unable to catch Him in a statement in the presence of the people; and they were amazed at His answer, and said nothing.

27Now some of the Sadducees (who maintain that there is no resurrection) came to Him,

28and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife, and he is childless, that his brother is to marry the wife and raise up children for his brother.

29So then, there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless;

30and the second

31and the third married her; and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children.

32Finally the woman also died.

33Therefore, in the resurrection, which one’s wife does the woman become? For all seven married her.”

34Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and the women are given in marriage,

35but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;

36for they cannot even die anymore, for they are like angels, and are sons of God, beingsons of the resurrection.

37But as for the fact that the dead are raised, even Moses revealed this in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB.

38Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; for all live to Him.”

39Some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.”

40For they did not have the courage to question Him any longer about anything.

41But He said to them, “How is it that they say theChrist is David’s son?

42For David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, “SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,

43UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET.” ’

44Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and so how is He his son?”

45And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples,

46“Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love personal greetings in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,

47whodevour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive all the more condemnation.”

Luke 21

1Now He looked up and saw the wealthy putting their gifts into the temple treasury.

2And He saw a poor widow putting in two lepta coins.

3And He said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them;

4for they allcontributed to theoffering from theirsurplus; but she, from her poverty, put in allthat she had to live on.”

5And while some were talking about the temple, that it was decorated with beautiful stones and vowed gifts, He said,

6As for these things which you are observing, the days will come when there will not be left one stone uponanother, which will not be torn down.”

7They asked Him questions, saying, “Teacher, when therefore will these things happen? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?”

8And He said, “See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not go after them.

9And when you hear of wars and revolts, do not be alarmed; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately.”

10Then He continued by saying to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom,

11and there will bemassive earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrible sights and greatsigns from heaven.

12“But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, turning you over to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors on account of My name.

13It will lead toan opportunity for your testimony.

14Somake up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves;

15for I will provide youeloquence and wisdom which none of your adversaries will be able to oppose or refute.

16But you will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, other relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death,

17and you will be hated by all people because of My name.

18And yet not a hair of your head will perish.

19By your endurance you will gain yourlives.

20“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near.

21Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are insidethe city must leave, and those who are in the country must not enterthe city;

22because these are days of punishment, so that all things which have been written will be fulfilled.

23Woe to those women who are pregnant, and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for there will be great distress upon theland, and wrath to this people;

24and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25“There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves,

26people fainting from fear and the expectation of the things that are coming upon theworld; for the powers ofthe heavens will be shaken.

27And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

28But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

29And He told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees:

30as soon as they put forth leaves, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near.

31So you too, when you see these things happening,recognize that the kingdom of God is near.

32Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things take place.

33Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

34“But be on your guard, so that your hearts will not be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that this day will not come on you suddenly, like a trap;

35for it will come upon all those who live on the face of all the earth.

36But stay alert at all times, praying that you will have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

37Now during the day He was teaching in the temple, but at evening He would go out and spend the night on the mountain that is called Olivet.

38And all the people would get up very early in the morning to come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.
