Journey Through God's Word

Matthew 6:5-15; Matthew 7:7-11; Philippians 4:4-9

Matthew 6:5-15

5"Also, when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to pray [publicly] standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets so that they may be seen by men. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, they [already] have their reward in full.

6But when you pray, go into your most private room, close the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you.

7"And when you pray, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.

8So do not be like them [praying as they do]; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

9"Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

10' Your kingdom come, Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

11'Give us this day our daily bread.

12'And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors [letting go of both the wrong and the resentment].

13'And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.[For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]'

14For if you forgive others their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins], your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15But if you do not forgive others [nurturing your hurt and anger with the result that it interferes with your relationship with God], then your Father will not forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 7:7-11

7" Ask and keep on asking and it will be given to you; seek and keep on seeking and you will find; knock and keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you.

8For everyone who keeps on asking receives, and he who keeps on seeking finds, and to him who keeps on knocking, it will be opened.

9Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will [instead] give him a stone?

10Or if he asks for a fish, will [instead] give him a snake?

11If you then, evil (sinful by nature) as you are, know how to give good and advantageous gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven [perfect as He is] give what is good and advantageous to those who keep on asking Him.

Philippians 4:4-9

4Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, take pleasure in Him]; again I will say, rejoice!

5Let your gentle spirit [your graciousness, unselfishness, mercy, tolerance, and patience] be known to all people. The Lord is near.

6Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God.

7And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].

8Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God's word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].

9The things which you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things [in daily life], and the God [who is the source] of peace and well-being will be with you.
