denotes "nourishment, food" (akin to trepho, "to rear, nourish, feed"); it is used literally, in the Gospels, Acts and Jam 2:15; metaphorically, in Heb 5:12, Heb 5:14, RV, "(solid) food," AV, "(strong) meat," i.e., deeper subjects of the faith than that of elementary instruction. The word is always rendered "food" in the RV, where the AV has "meat;" e.g., Mat 3:4, Mat 6:25, Mat 10:10, Mat 24:45, Luk 12:23, Joh 4:8, Act 2:46, "did take their food," RV (AV, "did eat their meat"); Act 9:19, "took food;" Act 1:27-34, Act 27:36. The AV also has "food" in Act 14:17, Jam 2:15.

"sustenance, food," a strengthened form of No. 1 (dia, "through," suggesting a sufficient supply), is used in 1Ti 6:8.
