"showing oneself above others" (huper, "over," phainomai, "to appear"), though often denoting preeminent, is always used in the NT in the evil sense of "arrogant, disdainful, haughty;" it is rendered "haughty" in Rom 1:30, 2Ti 3:2, RV, AV, "proud," but "proud" in both versions in Luk 1:51, Jam 4:6, 1Pe 5:5; in the last two it is set in opposition to tapeinos, "humble, lowly." Cp. the noun huperephania, Mar 7:22, "pride."
