signifies (a) "a necessity," what must needs be (see NEEDS), translated "necessity" (in some mss. in Luk 23:17) in 1Co 7:37, 1Co 9:16, 2Co 9:7 (with ek "out of"); Phm 1:14 (with kata, "according to"); Heb 7:12, Heb 9:16; (b) "distress, pain," translated "necessities" in 2Co 6:4, 2Co 12:10. "a need," and almost always so translated, is used in the plural in Act 20:34, "necessities;" Rom 12:13, RV (AV, "necessity"); in Phi 4:16, AV, "necessity," RV, "need." See NEED, NEEDFUL.
