Whole (made), Wholly, Wholesome

for which see ALL, A, No. 3, and ALTOGETHER, signifies "whole," (a) with a noun, e.g., Mat 1:5-30, Mar 8:36, Mar 15:1, Mar 15:16, Mar 15:33, Luk 11:36 (1st part), though holon may here be used adverbially with photeinon, "wholly light" [as in the 2nd part, RV, "wholly (full of light)"]; Joh 11:50, 1Co 12:17 (1st part); 1Jo 2:2, 1Jo 5:19; (b) absolutely, as a noun, e.g., Mat 13:33, 1Co 12:17 (2nd part).

for which see ALL, A, No. 1, is sometimes translated "the whole" when used with the article, e.g., Mat 8:32, Mat 8:34, Rom 8:22.

for which see ALL, A, No. 2, is rendered "the whole," e.g., in Luk 19:37, Luk 23:1.

from No. 1 and kleros, "a lot," is rendered "whole" in 1Th 5:23, see ENTIRE.

(cp. Eng., "hygiene") is used especially in the Gospels of making sick folk "whole," Mat 12:13, Mat 15:31, Mar 3:5, Mar 5:34, Luk 6:10, Joh 5:4, Joh 5:6, Joh 5:9, Joh 5:11, Joh 1:5-15, Joh 7:23; also Act 4:10; of "sound (speech)," Tit 2:8. See SOUND.

"wholly," 1Th 5:23, is lit., "whole-complete" (A, No. 1, and telos, "an end"), i.e., "through and through;" the Apostle's desire is that the sanctification of the believer may extend to every part of his being. The word is similar in meaning to No. 4; holokleros draws attention to the person as a "whole," holoteles, to the several parts which constitute him.

Note: In 1Ti 4:15, the sentence freely rendered "give thyself wholly to them" is, lit., "be in these (things)."

"to be in good health," akin to A, No. 5, is rendered "they that are whole" in Luk 5:31; "whole" in Luk 7:10 (present participle); "wholesome" in 1Ti 6:3, AV (RV, "sound;" marg., "healthful"). See HEALTH, SOUND.

"to save," is sometimes rendered "to make whole," and, in the Passive Voice, "to be made whole," or "to be whole," e.g., Mat 1:9-22 (twice), and parallel passages; Act 4:9. See HEAL, SAVE.

"to heal," is rendered "to make whole," Mat 15:28, Act 9:34, AV (RV, "health"). See HEAL.

"to be strong," is rendered "they that are whole" in Mat 9:12, Mar 2:17. See ABLE, B, No. 4.

"to save thoroughly" (dia), is used in the Passive Voice and rendered "were made whole" in Mat 14:36, RV (AV, "were made perfectly whole"). See ESCAPE, HEAL, SAVE.
