Matthew 3; Mark 1; Luke 3
Matthew 3
1Now in those days John the Baptist *came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,
2“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
3For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said, “THE VOICE OF ONE CALLING OUT IN THE WILDERNESS, ‘PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!’ ”
4Now John himself had a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5At that time Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea and all the region around the Jordan;
6and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.
7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance;
9and do not assume that you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you that God is able, from these stones, to raise up children for Abraham.
10And the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore, every tree that does not bear good fruit is being cut down and thrown into the fire.
11“As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
12His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
13Then Jesus *arrived from Galilee at the Jordan, coming to John to be baptized by him.
14But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have the need to be baptized by You, and yet You are coming to me?”
15But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he *allowed Him.
16After He was baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and settling on Him,
17and behold, a voice from the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Mark 1
1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
2just as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “BEHOLD, I AM SENDING MY MESSENGER BEFORE YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY;
3THE VOICE OF ONE CALLING OUT IN THE WILDERNESS, ‘PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!’ ”
4John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
5And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
6John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey.
7And he was preaching, saying, “After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to bend down and untie the straps of His sandals.
8I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
10And immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon Him;
11and a voice came from the heavens: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
12And immediately the Spirit *brought Him out into the wilderness.
13And He was in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild animals, and the angels were serving Him.
14Now after John was taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,
15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of Godis at hand; repent andbelieve in the gospel.”
16As He was going along the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen.
17And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will have you become fishers of people.”
18Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.
19And going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, who were also in the boat mending the nets.
20Immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and went away to follow Him.
21They *went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and began to teach.
22And they were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
23Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
24saying, “What business do you have with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are: the Holy One of God!”
25And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”
26After throwing him into convulsions and crying out with a loud voice, the unclean spirit came out of him.
27And they were all amazed, so they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”
28Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding region of Galilee.
29And immediately after they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
30Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and they immediately *spoke to Jesus about her.
31And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she served them.
32Now when evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were demon-possessed.
33And the whole city had gathered at the door.
34And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.
35And in the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and prayed there for a time.
36Simon and his companions eagerly searched for Him;
37and they found Him and *said to Him, “Everyone is looking for You.”
38He *said to them, “Let’s go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may alsopreach there; for this is why I came.”
39And He went into their synagogues preaching throughout Galilee, and casting out the demons.
40And a man with leprosy *came to Jesus, imploring Him and kneeling down, and saying to Him, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”
41Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out with His hand and touched him, and *said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.”
42And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed.
43And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away,
44and He *said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
45But he went out and began to proclaim it freely and to spread the news around, to such an extent that Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but stayed out in unpopulated areas; and they were coming to Him from everywhere.
Luke 3
1Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,
2in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.
3And he came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins;
4as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “THE VOICE OF ONE CALLING OUT IN THE WILDERNESS, ‘PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!
5EVERY RAVINE WILL BE FILLED, AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND HILL WILL BE LOWERED; THE CROOKED WILL BECOME STRAIGHT, AND THE ROUGH ROADS SMOOTH;
6AND ALL FLESH WILL SEE THE SALVATION OF GOD!’ ”
7So he was saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8Therefore produce fruits that are consistent with repentance, and do not start saying to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children for Abraham.
9But indeed the axe is already being laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10And the crowds were questioning him, saying, “Then what are we to do?”
11And he would answer and say to them, “The one who has two tunics is to share with the one who has none; and the one who has food is to do likewise.”
12Now even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what are we to do?”
13And he said to them, “Collect no more than what you have been ordered to.”
14And soldiers also were questioning him, saying, “What are we to do, we as well?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone, nor harass anyone, and be content with your wages.”
15Now while the people were in a state of expectation and they all were thinking carefully in their hearts about John, whether he himself perhaps was the Christ,
16John responded to them all, saying, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but He is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the straps of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
17His winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
18So with many other exhortations he preached the gospel to the people.
19But when Herod the tetrarch was reprimanded by him regarding Herodias, his brother’s wife, and regarding all the evil things which Herod had done,
20Herod also added this to them all: he locked John up in prison.
21Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened,
22and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well pleased.”
