Chronological Plan

Matthew 4; Luke 4-5; John 1:15-51

Matthew 4

1Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

2And after He had fasted for forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.

3And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

4But He answered and said, “It is written: ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT COMES OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’ ”

5Then the devil *took Him along into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple,

6and he *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written: ‘HE WILL GIVE HIS ANGELS ORDERS CONCERNING YOU’; and ‘ON their hands they will lift YOU UP, SO THAT YOU DO NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.’ ”

7Jesus said to him, On the other hand, it is written: ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.’ ”

8Again, the devil *took Him along to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory;

9and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.”

10Then Jesus *said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, ANDSERVE HIM ONLY.’ ”

11Then the devil *left Him; and behold, angels came and began to serve Him.

12Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee;

13and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.

14This happened so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled:

15“THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI, BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE GENTILES—

16THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT, AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH, UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED.”

17From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heavenis at hand.”

18Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.

19And He *said to them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of people.”

20Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.

21Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets; and He called them.

22Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

23Jesus was going about in all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

24And the news about Him spread throughout Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and severe pain, demon-possessed, people with epilepsy, and people who were paralyzed; and He healed them.

25Large crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

Luke 4

1Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness

2for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He was hungry.

3And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

4And Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE.’ ”

5And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

6And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory, for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I want.

7Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.”

8Jesus replied to him, “It is written: ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.’ ”

9And he brought Him into Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here;

10for it is written: ‘HE WILL GIVE HIS ANGELS ORDERS CONCERNING YOU, TO PROTECT YOU,’

11and, ‘ON their hands they will lift YOU UP, SO THAT YOU DO NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.’ ”

12And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been stated, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.’ ”

13And so when the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

14And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding region.

15And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.

16And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.

17And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. And He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

18“THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO BRING GOOD NEWS TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED,

19TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.”

20And He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all the people in the synagogue were intently directed at Him.

21Now He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in yourhearing.”

22And all the people were speaking well of Him, and admiring the gracious words which were coming from His lips; and yet they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

23And He said to them, “No doubt you willquote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! All the miracles that we heard were done in Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’ ”

24But He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.

25But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when asevere famine came over all the land;

26and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only toZarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.

27And there were many with leprosy in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them wascleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

28And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things;

29and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and brought Him to the crest of the hill on which their city had been built, so that they could throw Him down from the cliff.

30But He passed through their midst and went on His way.

31And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee; and He was teaching them on the Sabbath;

32and they were amazed at His teaching, because His message was delivered with authority.

33In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,

34“Leave us alone! What business do You have with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

35But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, it came out of him without doing him any harm.

36And amazement came upon them all, and they began talking with one another, saying, “What is this message? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”

37And the news about Him was spreading into every locality of the surrounding region.

38Then He got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her.

39And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and served them.

40Now while the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He was laying His hands on each one of them and healing them.

41Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” And yet He was rebuking them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that He was the Christ.

42Now when day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and they came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving them.

43But He said to them, “I must also preach the kingdom of God to the other cities, because I was sent for this purpose.

44So He kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

Luke 5

1Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret;

2and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets.

3And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little distance from the land. And He sat down and continued teaching the crowds from the boat.

4Now when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”

5Simon responded and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.”

6And when they had done this, they caught a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to tear;

7so they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, to the point that they were sinking.

8But when Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!”

9For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken;

10and likewise also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear; from now on you will be catching people.”

11When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.

12While He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

13And He reached out with His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy left him.

14And He ordered him to tell no one, saying, “But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

15But the news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses.

16But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.

17One day He was teaching, and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing.

18And some men were carrying a man on a stretcher who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him.

19But when they did not find any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus.

20And seeing their faith, He said, Friend, your sins are forgiven you.”

21The scribes and the Pharisees began thinking of the implications, saying, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, except God alone?”

22But Jesus, aware of their thoughts, responded and said to them, “Why are you thinking this way in your hearts?

23Which is easier, to say: ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?

24But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher, and go home.”

25And immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God.

26And they were all struck with astonishment and began glorifying God. They were also filled with fear, saying, “We have seen remarkable things today!”

27After that He went out and looked at a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me.”

28And he left everything behind, and got up and began following Him.

29And Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them.

30The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling to His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?”

31And Jesus answered and said to them, It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick.

32I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.”

33And they said to Him, “The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat and drink.”

34And Jesus said to them, “You cannot make theattendants of the groom fast while the groom is with them, can you?

35But the days will come; and when the groom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.”

36And He was also telling them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the patch from the new garment will not match the old.

37And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined.

38But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.

39And no one, after drinking old wine wants new; for he says, ‘The old is fine.’ ”

John 1:15-51

15John *testified about Him and called out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who is coming after me has proved to be my superior, because He existed before me.’ ”

16For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.

17For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.

18No one has seen God at any time; God the only Son, who is in the arms of the Father, He has explained Him.

19This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

20And he confessed and did not deny; and this is what he confessed: “I am not the Christ.”

21And so they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

22Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23He said, “I am THE VOICE OF ONE CALLING OUT IN THE WILDERNESS, ‘MAKE THE WAY OF THE LORD STRAIGHT,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24And the messengers had been sent from the Pharisees.

25They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26John answered them, saying, “I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.

27It is He who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy even to untie the strap of His sandal.”

28These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing people.

29The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him, and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

30This is He in behalf of whom I said, ‘After me is coming a Man who has proved to be my superior, because He existed before me.’

31And I did not recognize Him, but so that He would be revealed to Israel, I came baptizing in water.”

32And John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.

33And I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’

34And I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

35Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples,

36and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

38And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, “What are you seeking?” They said to Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?”

39He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day; it was about the tenth hour.

40One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

41He first *found his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ).

42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son ofJohn; you shall be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

43The next day He decided to go to Galilee, and He *found Philip. And Jesus *said to him, “Follow Me.”

44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45Philip *found Nathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses wrote in the Law, and the prophets also wrote: Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth!”

46Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good be from Nazareth?” Philip *said to him, “Come and see.”

47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite, in whom there is no deceit!”

48Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

49Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel!”

50Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

51And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
